Features of data management:

Reports
Show many kinds of data:
Anything that you can copy to the Windows clipboard can be used to make a Pic Figure in labElephant: charts, tables, images etc.
Pic Figures are easily made from charts and tables in Excel or Word, but also from figures in any proprietary software that allows figures to be copied
OLE servers such as Excel or Word can also make OLE object Figures in labElephant, if desired, but Pic Figures have similar functionality to OLE objects, and without the drawbacks of OLE objects
One-click drill-down to the original data from any labElephant Figure, for in-depth data views
Figure notes are displayed right next to the Figure, in rich text format
Figures in labElephant can also contain movies

Avoid repetitive data entry with templates:
When a new Experiment is created, the user can with one click copy over any conditions for Rationale, Issues, Materials or Methods that were used in a previous Experiment
In this way, only small edits need to be made to define the conditions for the new Experiment
Rationale "Ingots" for Experiments are developed on the Knowledge form, and then are associated with specific Experiments by simple Mark and Paste
Materials are entered on a separate Materials form, and critical Materials used in an Experiment can then be selected from a drop-down box on the Experiments form
Methods are entered on a separate Methods form, and critical Methods used in an Experiment can then be selected from a drop-down box on the Experiments form
In this way data entry is kept to a minimum, as most of the conditions for an Experment have been previously entered

Track your hypotheses:
Issues are how labElephant tracks the hypotheses that Experiments test
Issues are often hypotheses expressed as a question
Issues are entered on a separate Issues form, and then are associated with specific Experiments by one click from a list on the Experiments form
Issues can be ordered into a tree-like structure, which helps to organize them

Track what you discover:
Issue outcomes are how labElephant tracks the results of Experiments as they relate to the Issues that are tested
Issue outcomes allow you to easily retrieve all the data from Experiments where particular Issues were investigated
Multiple Issues can be addressed by a single Experiment, with each outcome specific to the Issue
The structure of Issues with Outcomes facilitates the drawing and recording of sharper, more specific conclusions from Experiments

Aggregating experimental data:
Data from multiple experiments are often pooled in a separate file from the files from a single Experiment
Such files are tracked in Summary files in labElephant, on the Summaries form
The Experiments that contribute data to a Summary file are also tracked
Figures can be made in Summary files, as for Figures from single Experiments

Build a story:
Stories are arrangements of Figures along with copies of their notes for editing into the Story narrative
Figures made in Experiments or from Summary Files can be added to a Story by Mark and Paste, and arranged in any order
Stories maintain the drill-down capability to the original data
Reports can also be made from Stories

Take snapshots of your results:
Reports can provide the basis for intellectual property claims
An Experiment report can be generated from any Experiment, in either .pdf or .xps format
Experiment reports include all Figures, and text with their audit trails, Materials and Methods, and all Issues addressed, along with their Outcomes
Reports can also be made from Stories, which can contain Figures from both Experiments and Summary files
Reports can be signed by both the experimenter and a witness, by the experimenter alone, or be unsigned
Signed reports require two-factor authentication
